The trouble with rebates; the industry loves them, but consumers gripe about expired offers, complicated instructions, and above all, long waits for checks

Article Abstract:

Rebate offers from computer makers and Internet service providers are straining consumer relations for some companies. Consumers successful with the process make copies of all forms, get a mailing receipt, examine all mail closely, and have some means of tracking where they are in the process for each submission. Consumer agencies are monitoring advertising practices that advertise a computer at a discount, but still require the shopper to pay $400 for 4 years of Internet service at the time of purchase. Manufacturers say rebates are complicated and time consuming because companies need to protect themselves from fraud.
