Winning respect in Silicon Valley

Article Abstract:

American Online Inc. has managed to win over a large number of skeptics in the high-technology industry despite its focus on user-friendly technology and services. This has been accomplished in a large part by Barry Schuler, currently the president of AOL Interactive Services. Mr. Schuler, who traded his multimedia company Medior Inc. to AOL in 1995, led the transition team that merged Netscape Communications Corp.'s operations into AOL's. He recalls that it was hard to sell his former employees at Medior on working for AOL, since it was considered by many in the industry to be somewhat behind the times. However, after AOL hired media executive Robert Pittman as its second-in-charge in the fall of 1996, Mr. Schuler agreed to take up an offer to relocate to the company's headquarters in Virginia after receiving assurances that America Online was a consumer-focused product, not a technology.
