The value of full, open, willing disclosure

Family-owned businesses can benefit from developing a culture in which information is shared among family members. Such a culture is based on trust and requires members to have well-developed problem-solving skills. Issues difficult for many family businesses to openly talk about are discussed.

Owners of family businesses neglect estate planning for a variety of reasons. For example, estate planning forces business people to face their own mortality. Additional explanations for the tendency to avoid estate planning are listed. Advice for effective estate planning is also provided.

Article Abstract:

Most family-run businesses experience communications problems at some point in time. Several tips are given on how to resolve disputes such as having regular family meetings, agreeing ahead of time on conflict-resolution procedures and putting non-family members on the board of directors.
