The wizard of the Internet

Article Abstract:

Japanese venture capitalist Masayoshi Son, founder and president of Softbank Corp., may own more of the Internet than anyone with his myriad investments. Son has invested $1.7 billion in more than 100 Internet companies including Yahoo! Inc.and Ziff-Davis Inc. SoftBank's venture capital arm has invested $906 million in eight Internet companies and holds about 7-8% of the publicly-listed value of all Internet properties. Son's strategy is to view investments not as one-time transactions but as alliances.

At Liberty to build an empire

Article Abstract:

Liberty Media, although acquired by AT&T Corp., is under the firm direction and guidance of John Malone. Investors believe in Mr. Malone. Liberty Media has a market capitalization of $43 billion, and anticipates a revenue total of $900 million for 1999. Malone has 4% equity interest in the company. Liberty Media also has its own board and can issue its own debt.
