The Australian pearling industry is facing growing competition from Asia. Atlas Pacific, Australia's only listed pearl producer, has been unable to gain domestic oyster harvesting licences and has therefore gone to Indonesia, where production costs are much lower. The Australian pearl industry will remain strictly regulated, deterring investors.
