High-income executives and employees alike can save money on taxes in 1998 if they identify their best options well in advance. There will be significant changes for 1998, both at-large and locally, and taxpayers should be aware of the planned goods and services tax and the tax office's new focus on small businesses. Tax savings present themselves in the areas of capital gains, balanced gearing, family home land taxes, retirement contributions, and phantom share schemes.

Super confusion could leave members out in the cold

Confusion over employer superannuation agreement obligations could hamper the Australian government's plan to mandate super fund choices for employees. Although the plan absolves employers from being liable for super fund compliance actions, a recent court case awarded A$75,000 to a deceased employee's family upon discovering coverage should have been provided.
