US Airways is about to order Airbus A-330s

Article Abstract:

US Airways Group., based in Arlington, VA., is to announce an order with Europe's Airbus Industrie for up to 30 A-330 twin-jet commercial airliners in a move designed to support its growing trans-Atlantic business. US Airways, the sixth-largest US airline, has firm orders for seven of the planes, agreements for seven additional planes subject to reconsideration, and options on an additional 16. If all 30 airliners are purchased from Airbus Industrie, the transaction would be valued at $3.7 billion, based on list price. US Airways has long purchased Seattle-based Boeing Co.'s planes, and had thought about purchasing its new 777s, but felt these were too big for European routes. With a choice between Boeing's smaller 767 and Airbus' 330s, US Airways chose Airbus in a move that many now see as a reflection of poor relations between US Airways and Boeing in the wake of a recent breach of contract suit between the two companies.

Northwest, changing its mind again, boosts some leisure fares 4%

Article Abstract:

During the week of August 23-30 1998, Northwest Airlines increased some leisure rates by 4% just a few days after it withdrew from a similar 4% increase. This most recent move at raising rates is more restricted than the carrier's previous actions. Northwest's previous rate increases involved all leisure rates with the exception of special sales. This new rate increase only related to 14-day advance purchase fares.
