U.S. Memories is likely to delay venture decision

Article Abstract:

US Memories Inc, the US alliance attempting to provide a domestic source of memory chips to US computer companies, will probably extend its deadline of Dec 31, 1989 for determining whether it will form a chip-making joint venture. When US Memories was formed in Jun 1988 by seven US computer companies, leadership in the consortium announced that it needed $500 million in equity by the Dec 1989 deadline. Now it is believed that US Memories could subsist with less equity because the organization has found other means of financing. US Memories is still seeking members to expand its presence in the semiconductor industry.

Chip maker gets jump on Japanese

Article Abstract:

Conductus Inc, a small Silicon Valley startup, will be the world's first company to open a factory dedicated to making superconducting chips. The startling announcement flies in the face of conventional wisdom, which holds that the Japanese are far ahead of the US in this area. Conductus says it has orders from seven companies for its prototype chips. Conductus has a 4,000-square-foot factory capable of producing only 25,000 chips a year -- too few for mass sales. Conductus says it will focus on electronic applications rather than on power applications such as levitating trains.
