U.S. Senate ratifies START II nuclear arms pact

Article Abstract:

START II was approved by the Senate on Jan 26, 1996, by a vote of 86-4. The treaty calls for Russia and the US to reduce long-range nuclear weapons to 1/3 the levels of 1993. Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin supports the treaty, but it may not win approval in the Russia's parliament.

Pres Bush and Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin participated in the Russian-American summit, held in Washington, DC, on Jun 16-17, 1992. The leaders agreed to make bilateral reductions in long-range nuclear weapons.
