U.S. describes Microsoft fight to secure ally

Article Abstract:

America Online Senior VP David M. Colburn testifies at the Microsoft antitrust trial. His testimony, taken together with new documentary evidence, reveals how Microsoft thwarted a planned strategic alliance between AOL and Netscape Communications, Microsoft's rival in the market for Web browsers. Microsoft's MSN online service was seen as a potential threat to AOL. The Government says Microsoft offered access to AOL's online services via a privileged place on Microsoft's Windows operating system. Prior to the offer, in the fall of 1995, AOL and Netscape were planning to join together and use their respective strengths in concert against Microsoft, regarded by them as 'the common enemy.' Thus, says the Government, Microsoft used monopolistic dominance of the market for PC operating systems to stifle competition in the browser market.

Plaintiffs' rift disturbs Microsoft judge

Article Abstract:

Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson has appointed Richard A. Posner mediator in the Microsoft antitrust case in response to the split between the Justice Department and the states' attorneys' general on how to punish the software giant. States have called for the harshest sanctions, such as breaking up Microsoft. Judge Posner is expected to be a clear head in a passionate battle of divergent views. If the case is not settled, Judge Jackson will probably issue a ruling early in year 2000.
