U.S. threatens to bar some EC contracts

The US announced Feb 1, 1993, that it would not grant contracts to companies from the European Community (EC) for telecommunications and power-generation services in retaliation for an EC directive effective Jan 1, 1993, ordering EC governments to favor EC telecommunications and power generation firms.

Quayle implies GATT, security link

Article Abstract:

A dispute broke out between the US and European Community after a remark by Dan Quayle seemed to link a resolution of the GATT Uruguay Round trade talks to a continued US military presence in Europe. Some observers believed the remark implied the US commitment to NATO might be threatened.

U.S., EC reach deal on farm subsidy cuts; GATT talks set to resume

Article Abstract:

Representatives from the US and the EC reached an agreement on Nov 20, 1992, to decrease EC agricultural subsidies to oilseed farmers. Although the agreement removed a significant obstacle to world trade negotiations, French officials called the pact 'unacceptable.'
