Microsoft fight will be waged on wide front

Article Abstract:

The Government's antitrust case against Microsoft promises to pit two powerhouses against one another as they vie for favorable public opinion and victory in the courts. A close alliance of the Justice Department and 20 states will deploy a range of tactics to portray Microsoft as a monopolist. The Justice Department and states concluded that attempting to block Microsoft's release of its Windows 98 OS would have backfired from a legal and public relations standpoint. The Government's strategy instead framed the case against Microsoft as determining the US economic future. Microsoft will dominate the Internet industry and eventually impact customer choice unless someone takes action now to increase competition, according to the Government. Microsoft said the government action will weaken consumer choice and the PC industry as the US prepares for the 21st century economy.

Microsoft made own problems, U.S. contends

Article Abstract:

Microsoft intentionally waited until seeking last-minute court protection from a possible Government delay of the release of its Windows 98 OS, according to a Justice Dept court brief. Justice said Microsoft, which plans to deliver Windows 98 to manufacturers in mid-May 1998, has known of the potential action for several months. Microsoft on May 6, 1998, asked the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to lift parts of a preliminary injunction that prohibits the company from requiring manufacturers to bundle its Internet Explorer Web browser with its current Windows 95 OS. Microsoft contended that the Justice Department had no legal right to apply the injunction and block the retail debut of Windows 98 on Jun 25, 1998.
