U.S.'s Christopher tours Russia, Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

Christopher visited Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Russia from Mar 19-22, 1996. The main purpose of his visit was to discuss the expansion of NATO into Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics. Russia opposes expansion and the issue has caused tension between the US and Russia.

U.S. Secretary of State tours Latin America; praises democracy, free-trade progress

Article Abstract:

Sec of State Warren Christopher met with Latin American leaders on a good-will mission to show support for their efforts to create free markets and implement democratic ideals. He visited El Salvador, Chile, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil in nine days.

Christopher tours Mideast

Article Abstract:

Christopher and Kozyrev encouraged Arab and Israeli leaders to continue the Middle East peace talks during Christopher's tour of the area on Feb 18-26, 1993. The deportation of Palestinian militants by Israel caused negotiations to stall in Dec 1992.
