Union Pacific to reverse centralization

Article Abstract:

Union Pacific Corp. is restructuring its railroad management which has been centralized in Omaha, Neb. for ten years. Centralization has been blamed for massive service problems in much of the Western U.S. The company will reorganize the railroad into three regions, with a vice president in charge of each. Union Pacific's rail system has doubled in size through acquisitions in recent years. "The railroad is too large to operate from one location," said Union Pacific spokesman John Bromley.

Everyone has heard that song before too. But with its new CEO it is planning to launch new high-speed train service, new menus, more legroom, and passenger trains in a few places where they had been eliminated. It is test-marketing a supertrain between Seattle and Portland now.
