Using Annual Reports to Strengthen Business Communication Students' Understanding of Audience

Article Abstract:

Annual reports may be used to strengthen understanding of audience in business writing. The annual report is addressed to the professional analyst or investor, but other readers include employees, customers, creditors, and students. An annual report includes: the financial summary, the Chief Executive Officer's (CEO) letter to shareholders, review of operations, management discussion analysis (MDA) and corporate information.

What Business School Graduates Say about the Writing They Do at Work: Implications for the Business Communication Course

Article Abstract:

This study examines what business school graduates say about the writing skills needed in the business world after college. Forty-three percent of graduates surveyed said that they spent over twenty percent of their time at work writing. This is the equivalent of one day in a forty hour work week. Dictation is not widely used by graduates. Ninety-seven percent said that they felt writing was important to their jobs.

Communication Course First, Remedial English Afterward

Article Abstract:

Business Communication teachers do not simply teach a course in remedial English; but sometimes students enter these courses with deficiencies in spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation. Mainstreaming is the process of teaching deficient students along with everyone else; it can create a drag on the teacher and students. Screening students for deficiencies can be expensive and time-consuming.
