Vodafone to buy AirTouch for $58 billion

In a $58 billion stock and cash deal, London's Vodafone Group PLC will buy San Francisco-based AirTouch Communications Inc. The magnitude of the deal seems to guarantee wireless communications as a staple in the lives of everyone. Both firms gain global geographic markets by merging. The firm's name will be Vodafone AirTouch PLC with headquarters in Newbury, England. Chris Gent will be CEO and Sam Ginn chairman.

VoiceStream confirms deal to buy Aerial

VoiceStream Wireless Corp. has agreed to buy Aerial Communications Inc. in a $3.27 billion deal. The combined company will be a significant rival to AT&T and Sprint Corp. Three months ago VoiceStream acquired Omnipoint Communications. All three of these companies used the global system for mobile communications and will collectively serve 1.5 million customers.

Deutsche Telekom bets big on GSM standard
