Foote Cone vs. Mazda is latest fight over severed ties

Article Abstract:

Discovered in True North's 10K filing with the SEC, Foote, Cone & Belding and former client Mazda are in a lawsuit that's going to arbitration in January 2000. The issue is over some car-lease ads run in the mid-90s whereby car dealers and their ad agencies had to settle with the FTC. Then Mazda sued Foote Cone for $2.5 million in damages and Foote Cone counter-sued for $5 million in unpaid bills for agency services. Foote Cone resigned the Mazda account in 1997 because of a possible conflict-of-interest. Mazda's new agency from that time forward has been Doner of Southfield, Michigan.
