What It Takes to Be a Woman at the Top

Article Abstract:

Only two per cent of the director's in Great Britain are believed to be women. Women are believed to be advancing into upper management in some businesses, especially in the service industries. Six successful women are interviewed about their business philosophy. They also discuss the lack of women in management. All of the women emphasize their need for planning and time management. They had all organized their domestic lives for maximum efficiency. A significant factor in all their lives is that they must also manage their homes. This additional burden could be insupportable to the women who do aspire to higher business ranks.

Eastern Pleasures while the Going Is Good

Article Abstract:

Tourism is Hong Kong's third biggest revenue earner, after garments and electronics. It is being promoted as a center for vacations, conferences and trade shows with particular emphasis on the British market. Tourists spending increased significantly in the first quarter of 1983 and the trend promises to continue. Shopping bargains abound in this colony of shopkeepers. Tourism is the only industry not feeling danger as the treaty deadline with China approaches.

The Lure of the Part-Time Portfolio

Article Abstract:

There is a growing trend in Great Britain to appoint non-executives to corporate boards of directors, people not employed full-time by other firms. Some of them work on several boards, making a career out of the occupation. This gives a firm access to skills and experience that supplement their own. The work of five part-time directors is described.
