What determines success? Examining the human, financial, and social capital of Jamaican microentrepreneurs

Article Abstract:

The influence of the factors of human capital, social capital, and financial capital on profitability was evaluated through the performance of 215 microenterprises in Jamaica. Knowledge of the factors which affect growth of small business enterprises is pertinent for developing countries and for devising policies for underdeveloped sectors of industrialized countries. Among the factors perceived to positively influence profitability were vocational training, occupational status of parents, and experience in business.

Early growth decisions of entrepreneurs: the influence of competency and prior performance under changing market conditions

Article Abstract:

A study was taken on 103 owner-operators of retail hardware stores who were part of a prominent dealer cooperative. It examined the effects of store performance and competency prior to expanding under changing market conditions. Results indicate that a focus on enlarging competency may assist entrepreneurs to keep the psychological bent essential to initiate actions that can enable their firms to perform well and to grow.

Human capital and structural upheaval: a study of manufacturing firms in the west bank

Article Abstract:

Research investigating the problems encountered by small manufacturing firms on the West Bank of the Palestinian town of Ramallah is presented. Particular attention is given to ways in which economic and political hardships influence firms' decision making.
