Overlapping seasons

Article Abstract:

The New York City Ballet again performed Balanchine's 'Apollo' in the Spring of 1996, with exceptional debuts by Ethan Stiefel and Igor Zelensky in the title role. Probably no two dancers are more different, yet each interpretation was both lucid and individual, with Stiefel the more lightweight and avian and Zelensky giving Apollo a feline dimension. None of the four Apollos at the American Ballet Theatre was trained in the US, and no two were from the same school of dancing. Examples were the Argentine Julio Bocca and the Russian Vladimir Malakhov. Performances of 'La Bayadere' are also discussed.

Will Newport Keel Over?

Article Abstract:

A United States loss in the American Cup yatch races could badly damage the economy of Newport, Rhode Island, site of the races. The races have been instrumental in transforming the former small town into a major tourist attraction. Many merchants in Newport have reported a large increase in sales volume in 1983. In addition to tourists, the boats and their crews are the source of considerable profits for Newport merchants. However, some Newport natives are skeptical that the town's increased popularity is a change for the better.

World opinion and the empire of circumstance

Article Abstract:

The seemingly contrasting views of world opinion and empire of circumstances are actually related. The idea of world opinion argues that the opinion of the majority affects the turn of global events while the concept of empire of circumstances opines that random events influence the lives of people. Analysis of history shows that world events are controlled by circumstances but world opinion is part of the circumstances.
