Novell is expected to announce layoffs of up to 25% of its staff

Novell Inc. plans to lighten its work force by an approximate 1,400 of 5,500, aournd 25%. The network software company hopes to boost profits as its major product, NetWare faces increasing competition. Income fell 83% for the year ending in July. Novell's marketing of new software has not found a favorable response and the company may be considering spinoffs.

Windows XP's power to add links to other Web sites stirs dissent

Article Abstract:

Critics are concerned over a feature that Microsoft Corp. has place on some of its prototype and test versions of the new Windows XP operating system. The feature is called Internet Explorer Smart Tags, and automatically inserts links beneath certain types of words. The links are to Microsoft Web properties or Web sites chosen by Microsoft.

Microsoft-AOL war heats up over net access

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp. is planning a campaign to protect its Windows desktop franchise from threatening alternatives, like AOL's Internet service. Microsoft will package and aggressively market its instant messaging, Internet access, broadband, and wireless products and services. Part of their strategy is to cut prices. For example, Microsoft is offering a $400 rebate on a new computer if the consumer signs a 3 year contract with MSN for Internet services. The company is also considering issuing a 'tracking stock' for its Internet businesses.
