With American flair, Hasso Plattner leads Europe's tech revival: His software and his style influence a generation of young entrepreneurs

Article Abstract:

With his wild success and eccentric style, Hasso Plattner, co-chairman and co-founder of the new German software giant SAP AG, is becoming in Europe what Bill Gates of Microsoft has long been in America: an inspiring icon who is influencing an entire industry. SAP's success is indicative of a new trend in which Europe's technology industry is undergoing a renaissance. Many European tech firms are being quickly added on new Nasdaq-style markets throughout Europe. While the US remains the dominant hi-tech center, SAP is the world leader in "enterprise application" software that automates and connects companies' basic operations. Plattner's style is decidedly American, introducing a new brash, cavalier attitude to European corporate conventions.

Republic Services gets mild response in public offering

Article Abstract:

When Republic Industries Inc. decided to spin off its solid waste division as a new company, Republic Services Inc., it was touted as the largest initial public offering of the 1998 year so far with some 55 million shares originally priced at $24 each. Because of a widespread fear among analysts that Republic Services hadn't yet fully integrated recent acquisitions, the initial cash infusion for Republic Industries was smaller than the company had hoped for. Republic Industries had expected to raise from between $1.5 billion to $2 billion.
