Women at the top

Article Abstract:

Women in top positions in associations and corporations are still a minority in Australia. Some industry analysts theorize that women feel there is a queue for big corporation jobs, and that they make strides by running an association and then returning to a corporation to compete for top jobs. The following female association leaders are profiled: Philippa Smith, Julie Mills, Catherine McPherson, Fiona McLeod, Wendy Craik, Susan Ryan, and Katie Lahey.

Patchy but still promising; the latest corporate results have been compromised by a few dismal performers

Article Abstract:

Stockbroking firm J.B. Were and Son Ltd. reports a combined net profit of 134 of the companies they monitor at Australian $14.9 billion, a drop of 3.6% from the previous year, although during 1998-1999 Australia experienced low interest rates, insignificant inflation, and elevated consumer spending. The decline is the result of the poor performance of three corporations. Investors can anticipate overall profit growth in 1999-2000.
