Working hard and playing hard: constructive uses of on-line recreation

Article Abstract:

Online recreation has become an intractable part of the workplace for many organizations. Computer-based recreation and play are possible not only through online games but also through chat rooms, online gambling, and virtual shopping malls. Beyond these recreational activities, other forms of computer-based diversions are being introduced. For instance, some employees can now monitor the activities of their children while in day care centers through the Internet or check their personal investments online. While some managers have sought to control these activities, reasoning that they take paid time away from the employer, some companies are resorting to constructive recreation. Constructive recreation considers the work tasks of the individual to determine timing and intensity, is aligned with the organizational culture and mission, cultivates creativity and healthy behavior, and considers the unique needs of others.

Business performance and family-friendly policies

Article Abstract:

The introduction of family-friendly policies into some British and American corporations was evaluated and was found to offer many positive benefits and few disadvantages. Non-standard working practices such as flexible working hours, reduced working hours, voluntary financial assistance by employers to workers in need and periods of time off work to care for sick or elderly relatives and children are known as family-friendly policies. Evaluation of the policies was carried out using before and after comparisons. Specifically, statistics were compiled on the areas of absenteeism, turnover, sickness, retention and productivity. Another approach was to compare performances of similar organizations. The results showed evidence of increased productivity, improved morale and motivation among employees with minimal disadvantages.
