Yahoo! results beat estimates as revenue surges

Article Abstract:

Yahoo! exceeded 2nd qtr 1998 expectations by reporting earnings of $8.1 million, or 15 cents a diluted share, before one-time charges. Revenue of $41.2 million almost tripled the Internet-directory company's 2nd qtr 1997 total of $14.1 million. By comparison, a First Call consensus of analysts had projected Yahoo to earn nine cents a share before charges, on revenue of approximately $35 million. Analysts praised Yahoo's performance while adding that its average ad rates have plateaued at nearly $25 per 1,000 viewers after rising $1 or $2 early in 1998. Yahoo also announced plans to split its stock 2 for 1, effective Aug 3, 1998. Another move will consist of raising $250 million in a private equity investment by selling almost 1.4 million shares to Southbank's US affiliate. The sale to Japan-based Southbank, the largest current shareholder, will assist in financing future acquisitions.
