Instant message services at AOL quietly linked
Article Abstract:
America Online may have created a global instant messaging system for its 138 million possible clients via the integration of AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ, which it purchased several years ago. The Federal Communications Commission has concerns over this dominance of instant-messaging technology, especially in light of the potential merger with Time Warner. Yahoo! and Microsoft want the FCC to have AOL's services available to the competition. An ICQ customer can now access AOL Instant Messenger, though America Online has kept this knowledge low profile. Some feel the Internet service provider is building a monopoly with AOL Instant Messenger.
