The restoration of Tonbridge School Chapel undertaken by Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams successful combines latest materials and building services while giving consideration to the High Gothic features of the original chapel, which was destroyed by fire in 1988. The school is very pleased with the way in which new and old elements have been linked, and believes that it now has one of the finest school chapels in the UK. The fairy godmother of chapels: the Historic Chapels Trust, which will be five years old this year, rescues chapels for disuse, decay and a 'worthy but dull' reputation

Article Abstract:

The Historic Chapels Trust was launched in 1992 with the aim of rescuing chapels from disuse, decay and vanadalims. It has a wide remit, and buildings do not have to be Christian. The majority of its repair budget will come from the Heritage Lottery Fund in the future, as there is more money available than from English Heritage, and generous grants are on offer. The trust is currently negotiating for several Grade II or II chapels and a synagogue.

Tonbridge school chapel

Article Abstract:

Tonbridge school chapel was damaged by fire in 1988 and was exposed to the weather before rebuilding work began in 1992. Only the walls and floor remained, although they were seriously damaged. New brick and sandstone was required to reconstruct the walls, matching the original material. The walls, which were saturated may take years to dry out and dampness is being monitored.
