Article Abstract:

Iraq has rejected plans for a new United Nations (UN) weapons inspectorate that involved a number of concessions for Iraq. The UN Security Council has set up the inspectorate, with three members abstaining, and the abstentions may encourage Iraq to ignore the resolution. French lack of firmness with Iraq had previously encouraged Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, to defy the UN, and France is one of the abstainers, as are China and Russia. There could still be more support for the inspectorate at a later stage.

Article Abstract:

Chile's congress passed a bill to permit joint ventures between its state-owned copper firm Codelco and private businesses. However, the new law has been watered down by amendments proffered by mining minister Juan Hamilton that require Codelco to retain a majority interest in any new mines.

Article Abstract:

People in Chile do not trust their pension investments because of the pensions' mismanagement. Chile has both state and individual account pensions, but they performed poorly in 1995, with a 2% loss. Pension reform laws are starting to prevent future losses.
