A bicriterion framework for operations assignment and routing flexibility analysis in Cellular Manufacturing Systems

Article Abstract:

Cell manufacturing systems compartmentalize production in such a way that production units pass through a particular machine grouping independent of any particular machine type. This provides for alternative machine routing through the multifunction capability of the machines themselves. Such a production flexibility often result in trade-offs between processing times and production costs. Two operation assignment frameworks formulations were developed for minimizing total production cost and total production times based on the cells' process trade-off capabilities.

Multiple bottleneck assignment problem

Article Abstract:

The sum version and bottleneck version of the assignment problem have many applications which have been thoroughly studied. A more general model involving a new lower bounding strategy has been developed for the multiple bottleneck assignment problem, which is a strongly NP-hard problem. Computational results indicate that the use of the proposed sub-gradient algorithm results to significant improvement on the bounds reported in research.

Selection of parts and machines for cellularization: a mathematical programming approach

Article Abstract:

A mathematical programming model is proposed in choosing parts and machines for cellular manufacturing with emphasis on optimized selection procedures. Results show that the model is successful in this regard such that the parts and machines required given a particular number of cells involved are optimally chosen. Computations from test problems are provided to support the effectiveness of the proposed method.
