A blow for Hambros

Article Abstract:

Corporate finance institution Hambros Bank faces an uncertain future now that its head of corporate finance, Nigel Pantling, has resigned. Pantling surprised the City with his resignation in July 1997 and was highly respected. He had been at the bank since 1994 and was considered to be an asset to the firm. His resignation comes at an awkward time for Hambros following its troublesome involvement with financier Andrew Regan in the doomed attempt to take over the cooperative association Co-operative Wholesale Society.

Local heroes

Article Abstract:

Local corporate financiers in Scandinavia continue to do good business despite competitive pressures from multinational bankers. The big firms, including Goldman Sachs, Lazards and CSFB, are seeking a strong presence in the region and have been successful with big cross-border acquisitions and mergers. However, chief executives often turn to local financiers in other transactions as they believe them to have good local market knowledge.

The price of independence

Article Abstract:

George Magan has sold corporate finance firm JO Hambro Magan to NatWest Markets, much to the surprise of the banking sector. Magan started the business in 1988 and had always been proud of his independence from other companies. The success of Jo Hambro Magan has meant that it must join with a larger bank to be able to develop any further. Magan will be chairman of the United Kingdom and European section within the new company.
