A city for new labour

Article Abstract:

Sheffield, England, is a city with some notable examples of 20th century architecture. The vast Park Hill housing estate, with its sky-streets concept, has attracted comment since its construction in the 1950s. University buildings designed by Gollins, Melvin & Ward in the 1960s are also notable, particularly the 20-floor Arts Tower. The city endured a period of decline during the 1970s and 1980s, not helped by the construction of the vast Meadowhall shopping centre outside the city, but at the end of the 1990s it has a new confidence marked by buildings including the Branson Coates' pop centre.

A man for all theories

Article Abstract:

It is now 100 years since the death of William Morris, but his influence continues to be acknowledged. He is seen as the pioneer of the Arts and Crafts movement, and has also been linked with the modern planning system, sexual equality and the environmental movement. He is still admired by people who share his scepticism about a lot of contemporary architecture and who reject the idea that architects can reshape the world.

A homage to Aalto

Article Abstract:

The architectural heritage of Finland is rich and diverse, especially twentieth-century architecture which can be found in many Finnish churches. One of Finland's most famous modern architects is Alvar Aalto who experimented with shapes and material textures. Members of the Twentieth Century Society conducted a tour of Finnish buildings, designed and constructed by Aalto, as part of an appreciation of Finnish architecture.
