A deal of trouble

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese lawmakers are holding back the proposed venture between McDonnell Douglas Corp and Taiwan Aerospace Corp (TAC). The plan proposes that TAC, a state-controlled corporation, invest 40% in McDonnell's civilian aircraft division in return for production shares of the MD12 aircraft. However, Taiwanese legislators consider the deal unsound and, therefore, detrimental to the national interest. As a result, TAC is considering alternative funding sources which would not demand a direct hand in investment decisions. McDonnell's competitiveness in the civilian aircraft industry largely depends on the timely development of the MD12.

Taipei on a tightrope

Article Abstract:

Taiwan has moved to allay fears that the US would impose prohibitive sanctions against Taiwan's electronic and information industries due to a dispute over intellectual property rights. Specifically, Taiwan proposed the introduction of a physical inspection process, reform of the legal code which applies to intellectual property rights and court application of the law. The initiatives were proposed by Taiwan to preempt possible US trade sanctions against Taiwanese industries, in spite of protests that there are other major infringers on intellectual property laws.

Domino theory: Taipei hopes Lee's U.S. visit sets a precedent

Article Abstract:

Taiwan hopes President Lee Tseng-hui's recent visit to the US will set a precedent for greater international recognition but is anxious not to damage the improving relations with China. Lee, now favored to easily win Taiwan's first elections ever for a president next year, drew less Chinese criticism than the US did for allowing the visit, but the US Congress returned the vitriol, reflecting its unhappiness with current US policy and its strong support for Taiwan.
