The flight to rail

Article Abstract:

High-speed trains linking European cities such as those that serve the Paris-Lyon and Frankfurt-Hamburg routes are emerging as a serious threat to the airlines that offer short-haul services over these same routes. Lower prices, faster rail travel times and growing frustration over the delays caused by air traffic congestion in Europe's crowded domestic air lanes are drawing an increasing number of passengers away from airlines to these high-speed rail services. If the trend continues, the Association of European Airlines (AEA) estimates that as many as 20% of airline passengers may shift to high-speed rail services. The AEA suggests that cooperation with rail services may be the best way to counter this disturbing trend.

The business of leisure

Article Abstract:

Changing patterns of work and leisure are increasing the demand for leisure services. Tourism will become the largest sector in the international economy by 2000. In Europe, working hours have continued to decrease, which, coupled with increasing living standards, has fueled the European leisure and tourism industries. The European Commission has proposed a directive that will harmonize the organization of working time in the European Community by setting standards that define minimum holiday times and maximum work times.
