A friend in need

Article Abstract:

Thailand is seeking to establish closer trading links with neighbouring Asian countries in an effort to boost its faltering economy and balance out a possible fall in investment from the US. It has already had a positive response from China, which is also seeking to develop trade links with India, Burma and Bangladesh. It is benefiting from its special relationship with China, which is particularly interested in barter deals. It is also seeking to establish a market for Thai goods in South Asia, where it also sees potential for a new trading corridor.

Bailout blues

Article Abstract:

Thailand has gained admiration for complying with the terms of a $17.2 billion rescue package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, it has proved impossible for Thailand to export its way to economic recovery, especially in the light of the weak nature of the regional economy. Furthermore, capital flight from Asia as a whole has meant that foreign funds have not returned to Thailand with the country's economic revival. It is now possible that the IMF will consider easing Thailand's budgetary targets for 1998.

Man the pumps

Article Abstract:

There are indications that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is responding to criticisms of its approach to dealing with economic crisis in Indonesia. It is already permitted the Indonesian government to maintain food subsidies that were scheduled to be phased out by Oct 1, 1998, and may also consider easing interest rate and exchange rate targets. The IMF's approach to dealing with Indonesia's problems will have significant repercussions for its status in Asia and abroad.
