The currency market crisis that has forced the UK and Italy to withdraw from the European exchange-rate mechanism (ERM) could worsen if the Sep 1992 referendum in France on the Maastricht treaty fails to pass. The currencies of several European Community member nations are evaluated.

Those damned dominoes

Article Abstract:

The Barings investment bank collapse highlights the risks of a collapse of the international payments system, of runs on similar banks, and of a liquidity crisis. Some prevention tools are deposit insurance, higher capital ratio rules, and tighter banking laws, or 'narrow banking.'
