A helping hand: Australia urges caution on human rights campaigning

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating recommended a more low-key approach to human rights in Asia during a recent visit to Washington. Keating was probably making his recommendations in light of the Australia's attempt to become more of an economic power in Asia through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum. Some Asian nations are suspicious of Apec due to the involvement of Australia and the US. Australia is counting on receiving the support of Indonesia and using that support to sway the other member nations.

Clinton's tax take

Article Abstract:

Asian companies are skeptical about Pres Bill Clinton's plan to extract an additional $45 billion in taxes from foreign businesses in the US. Clinton claims that 70% of these companies evade taxes amounting to almost $30 billion annually. Japanese firms, however, dispute this claim. Foreign companies may soon turn to the system of advance pricing agreement (APA) in which transfer pricing is decided among the tax authorities and the foreign company prior to accounting.

Article Abstract:

Bill Clinton's administration has not revealed its official stand regarding the India and Pakistan conflict over Kashmir as Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin decided to visit India and decided to sell powerful rocket engines for India's space program. Analysts agree that theUS should take an impartial stand regarding the conflict over Kashmir and most dismiss Russia's move as purely an economic one, which does not translate into a special military relationship.
