There are divisions within the Democratic party in Massachusetts which mean that the party's candidate for the governorship has not received the support that could be expected from his party. There were two challengers, neither of whom were likely to be able to defeat the Republican, Paul Cellucci. Thomas Finneran, speaker of the House of Representatives of the state, postponed supporting Harshbarger until he could be certain that the candidate was not from the party's 'loony left'.
