A hundred years of failure?

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Labor Party has attached importance to its history and is to celebrate its centenary from Oct 1999. The party leader, Tony Blair, is less interested in his party's history than were previous leaders. He has analyzed what he sees as failures of the party, and emphasizes the dominance of the Conservative Party in the 20th century. The Conservatives appears to be a spent force when they were defeated in 1906, and Blair sees divisions in the political left as a reason for Labor staying out of power. There are parallels between Blair's views of the role of the Labor Party, and the policies of the Liberal Party in the early 20th century.

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, showed that passion is possible despite abandoning ideology, through his speech at the conference of the ruling Labor party. Blair claims to have retained the values of the Labor Party and to see politics as a way of improving society. Yet it is unclear how Blair's policies can change society since he does not favor redistribution except on a small scale, and is happy with inequality. Blair sees conservatism within the Labor Party as well as outside it. He differs from the Conservative Party in that he believes that the government can make positive changes.
