A limited vision of our future

Article Abstract:

The Royal Institute of British Architects'(RIBA) Strategic Study of the Profession appears to be limited and to ignore the possibilities offered by information technology. The Strategic Study is intended to set the agenda for the profession in the future but has failed to analyse its present state. Most architects work in small practices and need the resources of a central information service. This can be provided by electronic technology and RIBA should take a lead in so doing. The Strategic Study should be more radical and thorough.

Making the most of thermal mass

Article Abstract:

A study carried out by Oscar Faber and Derrick Braham Associates and BRE found thermal mass was an important factor in building design. The report on the study is due to be issued in late 1999. Along with the design of the thermal mass, the level of the thermal mass is important, such as the thermal access and identifying the correct thickness level. Architects must take into consideration the year long performance of the thermal mass when designing a building.

Dazed young, professionals stumble blindly, trying to work out what Part 3 is

Article Abstract:

Many architectural students are of the opinion that Part 3 professional exams is an intrinsic part of becoming a working, living, breathing part of the world of the built environment. However, in reality, it simply gives one a license to learn the tools of the professional trade by giving an understanding of the implications of architecture in both physical and legal sense and most importantly understanding one's responsibilities to the clients.
