A matter of timing: minister's tax plan upsets friends and foes

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese finance minister Wang Chein-shein resigned due to strong opposition against his proposed land-tax reforms. Wang's proposals, that sought to increase taxes on land sales, drew strong protests from the public as well as opposition and ruling party members. It was felt that the tax increase would decrease land investments. The ruling party seemed reluctant to accept the unpopular proposal due to forthcoming elections in December. At the same time, the loss of a reformist cabinet minister could damage the progressive image of President Lee Teng-hui's government.

Losing altitude

Article Abstract:

The private sector's hesitance to face investment risks have threatened to derail Taiwan's efforts to start an aerospace industry in partnership with McDonnell Douglas Corp. Unwillingness of the private sector to put up $2 billion in equity share stems from the doubts cast on the profitability of the centerpiece MD12 aircraft. However, the Taiwan Aerospace Co is hoping that banks will contribute to the government-supported project. Aside from the profitability question, Taiwanese investors are uncertain about the possibilityof technology transfer.

Slap in the face

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese government is imposing tough economic sanctions against South Korea for the latter's normalization of relations with China. Taiwan says that it understands the reasons given by the South Korean government for the normalization but what it cannot understand is South Korea's failure to consult with Taiwan on the negotiations. Among the economic measures taken in retaliation for South Korea's alleged betrayal is the withdrawal of trade preferences and the cancellation of the air rights given to South Korean airlines.
