Sustaining the new plans

Article Abstract:

The government published planning guidelines in February 1992 stating their ideals for the planning system. Plans are vital to provide new homes and workspaces but must have regard to environmental features already present. Planning authorities should offer help to applicants as well as not allowing developments which are unsuitable. Local authorities can also encourage certain types of development by allowing for them in local plans.

A new rural strategy

Article Abstract:

A report in May 1993 by several bodies involved in the UK countryside showed the dilemma of decisions concerning its future. The report highlighted the need for the rural economy to make the transition from supported agriculture to conservation. Areas of concern include the production of food, better forestry management, tourism, building and extraction of minerals. A perceived lack of national strategy is seen as one of the problems.

An agency with potential

Article Abstract:

The Urban Regeneration Agency is likely to take its funding from existing sources rather than be awarded extra funds, at least initially. Its remit will be the creation of new areas from previously derelict urban land. It will work with the private sector, and within planning regulations. It is hoped that its impact will be social and not purely environmental.
