A semi-integrated world

Article Abstract:

Globalization was eivident in the 1930s and has speeded up at different times since then, though barriers to integration have persisted, including immigration controls. Cheap communications have given a new urgency to debates on globalization. There have been previous periods of rapid change, such as the advent of cars. It is unlikely that everyone will start to follow US culture, since the cultural areas where the US is predominant are limited. Adaptability, freedom and equality are ideas that could spread world wide.

Behold, the emerald city

Article Abstract:

There has been progress in a number of areas in the 20th century and this progress could continue, though there are also fears that an economic crash could lead to a regression. Religion has persisted despite scientific progress, and this has social roots. There is a need to economists to show humility, and liberal arguments in favor of free markets are linked to intellectual humility. The idea is that the market should decide since few people have enough knowledge to carry out large-scale planning.

Freedom from want?

Article Abstract:

Progress has been made in a number of areas in the 20th century, such as increased leisure, mass education, and increased knowledge. Happiness does not appear to have increased in proportion to material advances, though the suicide rate is lower compared with 1911. Poverty can persist in relative terms even when poorer people are better off in absolute terms. There is also a sense that security is lacking as old ties of community, family and religion are replaced by those of the market.
