A sense of the organic: Caruso St John's house for a private client in Lincolnshire is a contemporary reinterpretation of a common domestic form, with attention placed on the rigorously unadorned structure and materials

Article Abstract:

Caruso St John Architects designed a house for a private client vaguely resembling the modern bungalows and detached house that characterise the village in Lincolnshire. The roof incorporates three differently pitched facets giving a different scale to each of the four sides. Unexpected window compositons and wall shapes were used and blockwork and MDF board were used internally, both structurally and as fittings.

Good bread beats cheap cake

Article Abstract:

Modern architecture is stigmatised because of its association with social housing, therefore mock period architecture is seen as the acceptable form of private housing. However builders and architects should avoid extremes and consider the Netherlands model where the modern project continues. Urban design should be compact and there should be a reintroduction of systematic building methods.

New ways of using flint

Article Abstract:

Proctor Mathews Architects have designed a house using traditional flint and brick that conforms to strict planning regulations while fulfilling the requirements of the clients. The house, in a Norfolk village, is an innovative, L-shaped design but is visually in keeping with the neighbouring traditional buildings.
