A shared space

Article Abstract:

Port authorities, planning organisations and development companies in Canada have participated in a research project to establish issues relating to Waterfront development in Canada. Interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data from 46 representatives. The research covered three areas of questioning, namely urban planning problems, outcomes and evaluations. The research shows that a lot of specialist knowledge exists in Canada, which is relevant to similar national and international projects.

Planning, design and managing change in urban waterfront redevelopment

Article Abstract:

Case studies of waterfront redevelopment projects in New York, London, Boston and Toronto are examined, particularly relating to planning issues and conflicts between the redevelopment agencies and the local governments. Plans that did not grant generous public acces to the whole of the water's edge did not work, and the best designs were those that concentrated on the quality of public space, while still providing general guidelines for building sites.
