A short-term bargain

Article Abstract:

The baht devaluation will have a short-term effect on lowering costs for overseas tourists in Thailand. Tourists will also benefit from a major sale promotion intended to boost tourism. Shops are reducing prices of designer goods by 20-70% during 1998 and 1999. Tourism chiefs had anticipated that the promotion would earn $24 billion, but economic events have made that expectation unrealistic. Shops would have to sell 35% more goods to equal foreign exchange losses due to the baht devaluation, and economic problems throughout much of Asia have reduced expectations of Asian tourist numbers.

Challenges from within

Article Abstract:

The growth of the Thai tourist industry seems to be stalling because of an oversupply of hotels rooms and environmental problems. However, government and industry are acting to help the situation. Bangkok in particular has overdeveloped its hotels by adding about 40% in new rooms but is maintaining a 1996 occupancy rate of only 60%. Most tourists come from East Asian group tours and this sector is expected to grow. Government and the travel industry are working to move tourists to less crowded sites and to offer incentives for domestic tourism.

Pattaya Perestroika

Article Abstract:

Pattaya, Thailand, has become a popular resort for Russian tourists. There are four Russian restaurants at the resorts, and shops are becoming increasingly geared to Russians. They benefit from the end of exchange allowances which prevented Russians taking funds abroad, and from a favorable exchange rate for the US dollar in relation to the Thai baht. The increase in Russian tourists was especially apparent from 1993, and they have improved the reputation of the resort.
