A telling trial: students test limits of government's tolerance

Article Abstract:

Many observers are viewing the trial of two student activists in Semarang, Java as a test of the Indonesian government's willingness to tolerate a more vocal political opposition. The two students, Lukas Luwarso and Poltak Ike Wibowo, have been on trial since Jul 3, 1993 for advocating nonparticipation in parliamentary elections in Jun 1992. Luwarso and Wibowo maintain that the government's limits on political parties render all Indonesian elections meaningless. A verdict is predicted by mid-October.

Forced disclosure

Article Abstract:

Indonesia labour leader Muchtar Pakpahan is currently standing trial on charges of subversion. Some observers believe that his trial has been deliberately put together in order to stifle the independent labour movement in Indonesia, and there is concern about the fact that the Indonesian government has pressed for financial disclosure in a political case. Disclosures of this kind could damage confidence in financial institutions.
