A turn towards private equity

Article Abstract:

Europe's private equity industry performed strongly in 1998, despite some signs of financial instability. It is clear that there is substantial institutional backing for private equity as an asset class. Many US investors seek the regional diversification of a pan-European fund, but it is also widely recognized that country-specific funds can be a beneficial investment vehicle. One of the key trends in the private equity sector in 1998 was the growing importance of the fund of funds market, with around 30 fund of funds vehicles being raised.

The independent corporate finance market has been growing since the end of 1994, in the lower end of the market, where most of the boutiques operate against smaller merchant banks and corporate finance departments. Winning repeat UK PLC business is important in building a successful boutique, and they are a good source of potential buyers. However, boutiques have to establish credibility and track record.

The consolidation of the UK merchant banking sector will bring new opportunities for M&A boutiques which can cater for smaller companies whose merchant banks spend too much time on larger clients. Boutiques, or independent houses, can offer a tailor made service with mostly independent advice. J O Hambro Magan, a leading boutique in Europe, recently advised on Swiss Bank's acquisition of Warburgs.
