A whiff of scandal: dispute delays Bangladesh fertiliser project

Article Abstract:

The construction of an ammonia and urea plant in Bangladesh has been delayed because of the demands by the new democratic government and the rise of nationalist sentiments in Dhaka. European and Japanese investors in the fertilizer plant have already changed some provisions of the contract perceived to be anti-Bangladeshi in scope. One obstacle that remains is the Bangladeshi government's release of its letter of guarantee. As a result, Bangladesh is being pressured by the Japanese government and the World Bank not to delay the construction any longer.

Risky flight paths: Bangladesh to open air service to small cities

Article Abstract:

Bangladesh's government on Aug 15, 1993 offered to license any privately owned company or companies willing to provide commercial air service linking the capital, Dhaka, with several as yet unspecified smaller cities. Biman, Bangladesh's national airline, does not provide service to these cities largely because the low fares mandated by the government make it impossible to do so economically. Despite this difficulty, four companies have asked for a license: Borak Travels, Vantage Travels, Orient Travels and Natasha Travels.

Things are looking up: foreign investors show interest in Bangladesh

Article Abstract:

Proposals by foreign investors are on the rise in Bangladesh, despite political and social upheaval. Investors from other countries are estimated to register $2 billion in proposals in 1996, following $750 million in the fiscal year that ended Jun 30, 1995. The reason for the surge apparently is Bangladesh's investment-proposal reform which shortens the time period between proposal and actual investment. The projects are simply registered and foreigners are permitted to own 100% of their businesses.
