Alcatel to acquire Xylan; has other targets

Article Abstract:

Alcatel plans to buy Xylan Corp. (Calabassas, CA) at a cost of $2 billion. This works out to $37 per share. Alcatel has recently made two other purchases of data equipment companies, being DSC Communications Corp. and Packet Engines Inc. Alcatel expects with the purchase of Xylan, which will remain a unit within the company, the company will have a larger presence in the telecommunication equipment industry. Alcatel's competitors have made similar purchases in the recent past. Alcatel has also hinted at making additional purchases in the future, without elaborating.

Lucent to acquire Kenan for $1.5 bn

Article Abstract:

Kenan Systems Corp., a privately-held billing software firm, will be acquired by Murray Hill, NJ-based Lucent Technologies Inc. for approximately $1.5 billion. Industry analysts have said that rumors are spreading about a possible acquisition of Alameda, Calif.-based Ascend Communications Inc. by Lucent for approximately $16 billion. The deal with Ascend would catapult Lucent into a dominant position in the data networking sector.
