AFRICA: 1.5MN INTERNET USERS IN 53 COUNTRIES

Article Abstract:

Faced with high telecoms rates (a hindrance to Internet development in Africa), local operators have introduced a regional access code which is billed the same price as a local call, so as to reduce connection rates. The system should help access providers enhance their offer to the entire country's level. Though, only 13 out of 53 African countries connected (the 54th, Somalia, is the only one deprived of any Internet connection) have adopted the system. The 53 countries connected (a strong progression from 11 in 1996) total 1.5mn Web users, compared with a population of 734mn, including 300,000 in South Africa. Africa totals 100,000 sites (not including South Africa), with English speaking countries much more advanced compared with French speaking ones, in general.

Ekstra Bladet is the most popular Danish newspaper on the internet. Last week (October 15-21), its site had 164,000 visitors. BT had 152,000 and Jyllands-Posten 140,000. Steen Moller, project leader for Ekstra Bladet's internet site, says the number of visitors increased significantly when the site began publishing domestic news and foreign news about twelve months ago. Before that, the site focused on sports and internet news.
